Brunel Street Works and GEQ Phase 2 Sites Selected to Trial New Government Vocational Qualification
Only a handful of Colleges across the UK are involved in the pilot, and Galliford Try Partnership London have formed a partnership with NewVic to develop this programme over the next few years until it is implemented nationwide.
The T-Level involves a 50 day on site work placement for students studying Level 3 Construction and Built Environment at Sixth Form College, with students aged 16-17 years old.
Galliford Try Partnerships’ Employment & Skills Coordinator @Sarah Budd has set out a schedule of works for the students so they can make choices on the routes they want to take within construction. This involves the students being mentored on site and tasks being set within the departments. This programme is being developed to bridge the skills gap in construction through the placement experience.
At the heart of the reforms, and indeed the delivery, and the employers without meaningful, well-constructed, and relevant work placement programmes, neither the students nor the training providers will attain ‘T-Level’ outcomes. These placements are intended to stimulate students and help them to become work ready. They also give employers an early indication of the capabilities and characteristics of the student and may well lead to employment and further training when they are 18 and over. Although the students are only a third way through their placement, we have enjoyed seeing their confidence grow and they have become fully fledged members of the team.
Our Brunel Street Works and Great Eastern Quays Phase 2 projects are currently trialling the scheme with 2 students from NewVic based on each site until May 2019.
